WHEN SHOULD I SEE A LAWYER?

I recommend coming to see a lawyer as soon as possible for an initial consultation. Gaining an understanding of the process, your rights, and the options available to you as early as possible, can help you prepare and work through your legal issues in an efficient and cost effective manner that best fits your situation. If you have been served with documents you should see a lawyer right away. Those documents are often time sensitive and you do not want to miss those deadlines or you risk having Orders made against you without your knowledge/participation.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY INITIAL CONSULTATION?

If you have been served with any documents, make sure that you bring those with you. You will also require a piece of photo ID. At the initial consultation it is my practice to go over the issues with you and then I will send you away with a list of ‘homework’ items that I will need if you complete in order to retain me to represent you in your legal matters.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT AN INITIAL CONSULTATION?

I will sit down with you, get a sense of the issues that are affecting you and we will discuss the options and processes available to you. We will talk about the options and will decide on a course of action that best suits your needs. I will then provide you with a list of information and/or documents that I need to proceed, and from there we will discuss fees and the retainer needed to acquire my services as your lawyer.

WHAT DOES A SEPARATION / DIVORCE COST?

The simple answer: it depends. I bill hourly, so the cost will depend on how complicated the situation is and how much conflict there is to resolve.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

The length of time will depend on your circumstances and the complexity of the file.

Since every file and client are unique, I strongly encourage you to come in for an initial consult to discuss your case, so that we can determine what would work best for you in your situation. A one-hour consultation with a lawyer can provide you with a great deal of information and guidance, providing you with a basic knowledge of how the law applies to you in your situation. If you need some assistance navigating the legal process, give us a call.
